Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has broken a world record set by longstanding rival Lionel Messi during his 91-goal year in 2012.
The Portuguese netted his side's equaliser in their 1-1 draw with Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night, and the goal, which came from the penalty spot, was Ronaldo's fifth in just three UEFA Champions League games this season.
The Portugal captain has now taken his tally of international goals in 2017 to 26 strikes – more than any other player ever achieved.
The four-time Ballon d'Or winner has now scored 11 times for Portugal this calendar year, helping them to qualify for their eighth major tournament since his national team debut.
Furthermore, he has also netted an incredible 15 goals in the Champions League since the turn of the year. In addition to his five UCL goals in the new 2017/18 campaign, the 30-year-old netted 10 strikes in his final five UCL games of last season.
Overall, he has now scored 26 international goals this calendar year, breaking the previous world record of 25 set by Messi in 2012. Ronaldo equalled the world record in 2013, but is now the sole holder of the impressive milestone.
In fact, he has three more Champions League games, and, likely, another two at the FIFA Club World Cup in December, to add to his tally.
The International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) annually crowns the World's Top Goalscorer, based on goals for their national team and in international club competitions, with Ronaldo being on track to lift the award a fourth time.
