Some Nigeria music artistes did not just stop at being artistes but have gone further to launch their own record label in a bid to help upcoming artistes achieve their dreams.
Stargist.com presents a list of notable Nigerian artistes who own a record label.
1. Don Jazzy – Mavins
After successfully leading the now defunct MoHits Records, Don Jazzy set out to create the Mavin Records which is one of the best and foremost record label in Nigeria. He still features in songs of other artistes asides those signed to his record label.
2. Olamide – YBNL
Owned by popular indigenous rapper, Olamide. The record label is one of the most populous and widely accepted Record label in the country due to the amount of trends gained by its signed artiste. Olamide still releases songs.
3. Davido – DMW Records
Super star singer, Davido also joined the league of record label owners when he launched his own record label called – DMW, acronym for Davido Music Worldwide.
4. M.I Abaga – Chocolate City
The record label has rapper MI Abaga as its chairman. Choc Boyz Nation is one record label that most young Nigerian rappers dream of representing. He recently released a song criticising fellow rappers titled ‘You Rappers Should Fix Up Your Lives’.
5. Wizkid – Star Boy Entertainments
Owned and controlled by Wizkid, this record has over the years produced artistes with very good vocals and applicable lyrical contents. Wizkid is one who keeps soaring higher.
6. Banky W – E.M.E (Empire Mates Entertainment)
EME is managed and owned by Banky W. It was home to top stars like WizKid and Skales. Nevertheless, the record label boost of stars like himself (Banky W), Shaydee and Niyola. DJ Xclusive is the label’s official DJ. Producers associated with the label include Masterkraft, Jay Sleek, Cobhams Asuquo, Spellz and Samklef, among others.
7. Tuface – Hypertek
Tuface is a great singer and Hypertek came out as a shocking surprise to almost everyone following 2face’s rendition to have a label of his own. Now, there is no doubt that hypertek remains consistent by pushing out more vocals from their label.
8. Falz -Bahd Guy Records
Nigerian actor, rapper and songwriter, Folarin Falana, popularly known as Falz was unable to get signed to a record label in his early days in the entertainment business and took matters into his hands and founded Bahd Guys Records.
9. Harrysong – Alterplate Records
Sonorous voice Afro-pop singer, Harrysong launched his record label, Alterplate, after a series of controversies with his former label.
10 D’banj – DB Records
Founded by the musical icon D’Banj, and his label mates, Kay Switch, Jay Sleek, Dee Vee, Jsoul.
