Thor: Ragnarok' Opens to Thunderous $107.6M Overseas

'Thor: Ragnarok'

Hollywood and theater owners are counting on the superhero film to breathe life back into the U.S. box office when opening on Nov. 3.

Marvel Studios and Disney's critically acclaimed Thor: Ragnarok opened to a thunderous $107.6 million at the foreign box office this weekend from roughly 50 percent of the marketplace.

So far, Thor 3 is performing ahead of such titles as Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Doctor Strange. And in many markets, it posted the biggest October opening ever.

The threequel, returning Chris Hemsworth in the titular role, is directed by acclaimed New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi.

The superhero film is likewise expected to do big business when rolling out in North American theaters on Nov. 3 — and none too soon after a late-October slump.

Tracking in the U.S. suggests the film will debut to $100 million or more domestically. Some think it even has a shot of approaching $125 million.

Thor: Ragnarok sees the Asgardian god team up with brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) and pal Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) to fight the goddess of death, Hela, played by Cate Blanchett. Idris Elba and Anthony Hopkins also star.

Thor: Ragnarok is the 17th title in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and currently boasts a 96 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Combined, the MCU films have grossed $12.6 billion at the global box office.

Nice one
