Although there's nothing wrong with romantic comedies and dramas like Friends with Benefits and The Notebook, they're not relatable material for many people. In films (as in everything), it's important to represent all groups, communities, and sexual preferences.
That being said, we've compiled a list of wonderful, diverse films that are super important for the LGBTQ community. Happy watching!
This documentary film examines the drag balls of New York City throughout the 1980s, and it celebrates and explores the African-American, Latino, gay, and transgender communities that originated them.
When Jenny (Katherine Heigl) plans to marry a woman (Alexis Bledel), she must relay the news to her extremely conventional family. Will her family accept the relationship, or will they become estranged?
5. The Living End (1992)
This comedy/drama chronicles the tales of two gay men, Luke and Jon, both of whom are HIV-positive. After Luke commits a crime with severe consequences, the two head off on a road trip.
6. Pariah (2011)
Pariah follows the journey of 17-year-old Alike, an African-American girl struggling to come to terms with her sexuality. Her very conservative family doesn't make Alike's decision to come out any easier.
7. G.B.F. (2013)
This teen comedy follows the story of two closeted gay teens trying to navigate high school. When one of them is outed, he is picked up by the "cool" girls and reaches instant popularity.
8. To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995)
This classic comedy tells the tale of three drag queens from New York City who set out on a tumultuous road trip to Los Angeles.
9. Imagine Me & You (2005)
When Rachel meets a woman named Luce on her wedding day, she begins to question everything, including her relationship with her husband and her own sexuality.
10. Shelter (2007)
When Zach meets his best friend's older brother, he never expects that he'll end up falling in love with him. Zach must then make some tough choices about how he wants his life to proceed.
11. Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013)
This coming-of-age drama explores the budding relationship between a shy, introverted teen with a very conservative family and a liberal, openly gay artist who falls in love with her.
12. Water Lilies (2007)
This coming-of-age drama charts the sexual awakenings of three teenage girls throughout the course of one summer. Much of the film occurs at the local swimming pool, where the girls are part of a swim team.
