They that you should never mix politics and sport but FC Barcelona did take a stand by backing the people of their city to vote in the referendum on Catalan independence. Now one club have invited Barca to play outside of Spain.
Whatever your politics there's no doubt that the scenes on the weekend in Barcelona, where police attacked civilians, including firemen, as they attempted to vote in the Catalan independence referendum were disgusting.
The vote has been labeled as 'illegal' by the Spanish government who didn't want it to go ahead. It led to violent scenes in the city and FC Barcelona having to play their game against Las Palmas behind closed doors.
There's been a threat to Barca, as well as other Catalonian clubs, that if independence were to happen they wouldn't be allowed to play in La Liga. That seems like an empty threat but you never know.
So luckily for Ernesto Valverde's side they've been given an offer by one club to come join their league. Russian second tier side FC Yenisey Krasnoyarsk, who are leading the National League, tweeted to invite Barca into their division:
The club posted to say, "We already know that Barcelona can change championships for the better, so we invite you to participate in the best football league in the world - FNL"
And the league even followed up from their division leaders with a tweet of their own:
They said they "do not object" so if Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique etc do find themselves in need of some new teams to play when they are no longer welcome in La Liga then at least there's an offer on the table.
It still seems highly unlikely that La Liga officials would want to play without Barcelona in their league considering the amount of money and competition they generate in Spain's top tier.
