Philippe Coutinho has told his Liverpool team-mates that they must quickly step their game up after their humiliating 4-1 loss to Tottenham at Wembley last weekend.
The Reds were outplayed by the Lilywhites in north London as Jurgen Klopp’s men suffered another blow to their Premier League hopes this season.
Liverpool have struggled to find consistent form this season and have only won three of their opening nine Premier League games to leave them 12 points behind leaders Manchester City in the race for the title.
Coutinho was unable to prevent Liverpool from slipping to a disappointing defeat on Sunday and the Brazilian playmaker has warned his team-mates that they must now set about improving their game as soon as possible.
Speaking to ESPN Brasil, Coutinho said: “We have to improve this as quickly as possible in order to win games, fight more, in more difficult games like this.
“To concede in the first four minutes, that unsettled the whole team a bit. Then the next one was after 12 or 13 minutes.
“It’s really difficult against a strong team when you start like that.”
Liverpool return to Premier League action this weekend with a clash against newly-promoted Huddersfield Town at Anfield.
The Terriers head into that game fresh from their shock 2-1 victory over Manchester United last weekend.
Liverpool are aiming to at least challenge for the Premier League title this season after the Reds finished fourth in Jurgen Klopp’s first full campaign at Anfield last weekend.
The Reds have never won the Premier League title.
