Wolverhampton Wanderers exposed Manchester City weakness

Manchester City struggled so hard against Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers in their Carabao Cup fourth round clash, City needed a penalty shoot-out to saw off Nuno Espirito Santo’s men.

Pep Guardiola fielded his second string players such as Yaya Toure, Claudio Bravo, Eliaquim Mangala, OleksandrZinchenko, Oluwatosin Adarabioyo against Wolverhampton Wanderers in a bid to ascertain their fitness and to give rest to the first teamers.

Claudio Bravo made two fine saves during the penalty shoot-out to keep City in the contest after Sergio Aguero failed to find the back of the net to break Eric Brook’s record of 177 goals for Manchester City.

Bravo was awarded man of the match as he made series of saves as their weakness was exposed by the Championship table toppers.

Aleks Zinchenko arrived at the club in 2016 as an aspiring young Ukrainian, one of his country's brightest players at the European Championships, he was loaned to PSV Eindhoven but he was not given the chance to showcase his talent.

He might be considered as a left back to cover for injured Benjamin Mendy whose season ended abruptly.

Tosin Adarabioyo was also tested with some minute but he looked calmer all night.

Guardiola charged Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva with the creative role in the midfield as he rested David Silva all night.

Gundogan and Bernardo Silva failed to offer the threat David Silva and Kelvin de Bruyne offered, Guardiola was forced to bring in De Bruyne to increase the creativity at the heart of the field.

With the introduction of Kelvin de Bruyne, the level of creativity and precision increased and passes were more accurate.

Then there was the defence, with City's lack of depth in the back four alarming – again, not until John Stones arrived did they look secure against Wolves' counter-attacking probes.
