Emre Can with Dejan Lovren and Loris Karius
Emre Can is best suited to being used in a defensive midfield role in the Liverpool FC team, according to John Aldridge.
The Germany international has made a bright start to the 2017-18 season following two assists in nine appearances in the Premier League.
Can has also netted twice in the Champions League to excel going forward with his powerful running and deft passing.
Liverpool have conceded 17 times in 11 games to raise concerns about Jurgen Klopp’s defence as his back four continues to get exposed.
Jordan Henderson has been used in a holding role this season but the England international has struggled with injury problems.
Former Liverpool striker Aldridge believes Klopp needs to use Can in the defensive role to allow his attacking talents to express themselves further up the pitch.
“One thing I would say, though, is how we need a defensive-minded player behind them if they do play together,” Aldridge told the Liverpool Echo.
“We’ve got Jordan Henderson, Emre Can and Gini Wijnaldum who can do that role, but for me it’s probably Can who is best suited to sitting there and breaking things up.”
Can has entered the final 12 months of his Liverpool contract and hasn’t been able to agree an extension with the Merseyside outfit so far.
The Liverpool midfielder has been linked with a potential move to Premier League title rivals Manchester City and Serie A giants Juventus.
The Merseyside outfit signed former Bayern Munich starlet Can in an £8.75m deal from Bundesliga outfit Bayer Leverkusen in 2015.
